Ok, I'm now betting that Twelve will actually be 12 years old. Because apparently the Doctor is no longer allowed to legally buy alcohol. Younger is not better!
I despair to even think who the new companion is going to be.

I did think it was going to take someone special to get me to watch Moffats series...looks like I probably won't bother.
What IS this obsession with youth??

My reaction
It's not an outright 'Oh dear God nooo!' BUT I'm disappointed they've cast someone so young... It's disconcerting that he's the same age as me. I always picture the actor being older than me. I picture the Doctor exuding gravitas not someone out of a boyband. At this rate thirteen is not going to be old enough to drink alcohol.
Of course he could blow me away but it's gonna take some doing...

Re: My reaction
And to think I was pissed off because Tennant is a year younger than me... {sigh}January 3 2009, 19:26:10 UTC 3 years ago

Oh dear, it was 2004 all again - for a time it seemed as if it was going to be Paterson Joseph as it seemed for a time back in between before the announcemnet in 2004 that Bill Nighy was to be handed the key to the TARDIS.
But aleast this time I did not actually have a national newspaper telling me that my preferred choice had actually got the role and then have elsewhere dash it. Instead we had the first mention of his name on various internet haunts yesterday (??? - the younger brother in Party Animals. Mm, too similar to Tennant, surely?; then his mention on the news just before Doctor Confidential (Oh Crumbs, they have mentioned him last) to David Tennant's first mention of the youngest Doctor yet (Sugar! ... Perhaps Paterson Joseph just looks very old for his age and was still at school when he was in Soldier,Soldier)
Not the end of the world, plenty of other things to worry about in 2009 before one even sits down to watch a show in Spring 2010 and one is quite prepared to see what it is that so captured Steven Moffat's imagination when casting - from his contribution to this particular DWC it seemed that he had expected to cast someone older.

It really doesn't help that the show is going Merlin on us and casting a guy that would be carded if he walked into a bar. Yeah, Yeah I know the DW is a "children's show" but come on...
The good news is This should provide Lots of plot bunnies for the writers out there... the first time Jack meets 11(will he rob the cradle), Donna and Martian BOY, Martha goes into pediatrics. Sorry for the sarcasm.

The problem is that David Tennant has had such an obvious love of, not only the role of the Doctor but the history of the show, it is hard to see anyone else in "his" place. *nods* It's much like Peter succeeding Tom.
Also, for the New!Who fan base, a lot of them only came on with DT, so this is their first regeneration. Methinks that the BBC was looking to retain these fangirls with the casting of Matt Smith, but they are obviously forgetting about us Classic!Who fans. Moffat wanted an older Doctor. I wonder what happened.
Besides, the DT fangirls will probably stop watching the show, just as the BP fans did after she left. Heck, I know of fans who stopped after CE left. It's always been that way with the show. Some fans pick out one Doctor and one companion and that's all that they will watch. I don't go that route, but I can sort of understand why they do that--it's a subset of single-interest fandom.
I also doubt that any of the RTD era companions will return, nor will there be crossovers with TW and SJA; besides, by the time the 5th "season" hits the air, both TW and SJA might be history. All we know right now is that there will be that one week series of TW and that SJA will have another series, probably next fall. It would be amusing if SJS was in the last special, saw Ten regen into Eleven and immediately demanded to be taken home! LOL!
Oh, well. I'll give the new guy a chance. Did so for the rest of them, so fair's only fair. I still need to see more One and Two, though.

At any rate, I also think that Mr. Smith's face looks unfinished. I'm just, as a friend put it, looking at the pictures, so underwhelmed. Oh, I'll give him a chance (as I have for all the other Doctors, as I watch the DVDs/videos/the programme itself over the years) but I'm just so not thrilled with the choice of such a young person. At this rate 12 will be a Time Teenager, and 13 a Time Tot! (Someone else referred to 11 as a Time Lad, not a Time Lord!) Really, I can't see 11 getting involved with River Song or standing up to Daleks and Cybermen. I do feel sorry for Matt Smith, coming after David. Really, it's like Peter Davison succeeding Tom Baker, difficult to do.
As for his costume, it will probably all trendy and hip for 2009, and he won't be able to leave the TARDIS without his iPhone. *winks*
And Matt Smith has appeared in two different productions with Billie Piper. I can just see the 11/Rose icons and fanmixes/vids looming on the horizon.
